Weekend intensive course at the Boston Islamic Seminary
Slavery & Anti-blackness in Islam
This workshop explores slavery and racism from a non-European perspective, diving into Islamic scripture and practice. Students will examine the alleged anti-blackness in the Islamic tradition, grapple with the morality of pre-modern human societies, religions, and philosophies that condoned slavery, and consider how we might address racism within Muslim communities and broader American society today.
Islam, Gender & Sexuality
Drawing on traditional Islamic texts, this workshop offers an introduction to gender and sexuality in the Muslim world. In addition to exposing students to key scholarly debates, this workshop also offers a third option beyond the two extremes that characterise much Muslim responses to issues around gender & sexuality: denying reality or distorting religion. As we shall see, to be inclusive and Islamic is not only possible but has also been the way that Muslims around the world have lived for centuries.
